Mitt Romney has launched his exploratory committee. And every story covering this seems to bring up his Mormonism, with the suggestion that Americans may not be ready to elect a Mormon president.
This strikes me as odd. After all, his father also ran for president, back in 1968, and I don't recall his Mormonism being made much of at the time. Has the US grown less religiously tolerant?
I suspect so.
Did anyone make a fuss, at the time, about Dwight Eisenhower being a Jehovah's Witness?
And note that there has never been another Catholic president, after JFK, despite Catholicism being the largest demonination in the US.
