On reflection, I have a further point to make regarding the tendency for politics to replace religion for those on the left. For many on the left, conventional morality is replaced by the simple expedient of voting for a designated party and programme. The necessary corollary is that they must view anyone who does not support that same party and programme as immoral.
This explains the intense hatred of the right on the left, and largely explains why we have lost all sense of fair play, perspective, and honest discourse in the political arena. The left necessarily views the right as evil.
No holds are barred in such circumstances.
